World Nettle-Eating Championships
The Bottle Inn at Marshwood presents the annual World Nettle-Eating Championships. Each year contestants munch their way through stinging nettle after stinging nettle, without a dock leaf in sight...
The competition began in the 1980s to resolve a dispute between local farmers over who had the longest nettles. Alex Williams brought in a nettle over 15 feet long, and challenged anyone to beat his record, promising to eat his if anyone found a bigger weed. You can guess what happened next. Alex ate his nettle, and the championships were born.
Supporting attractions over the weekend include an all-day Hog Roast and barbecue, live music, children`s entertainment and a beer festival offering at least 15 real ales.
