Wookey Hole Caves
Within Somerset's mysterious Mendip Hills lie the wonders of Wookey Hole, a series of brightly-lit caverns carved out by the River Axe. The caves also have their own museum, offering a detailed history of local archaeological and anthropological discoveries.
Visitors can enjoy a tour through 50,000 years of legend and history, brought to life by an experienced guide. The caves are the focus of many delightful tales interwoven with a mix of fact, legend and folklore. For example there's the story of the famous Witch of Wookey, based on the discovery of an old woman's skeleton in the caves over 100 years ago - a polished alabaster ball was also found nearby, the sure sign of a witch.
The whole family can experience an educational and fun day out, exploring the witch's lair, gambling real old pennies on the vintage arcade machines, losing themselves in the Magical Mirror Maze and learning how paper was made in Shakespeare's day at the fully functional Paper Mill.
New attractions for 2005 include the Valley of the Dinosaurs, the Enchanted Fairy Garden with fairies, dragons and elves, and the Pirates of the River Axe.
