A little pocket of Zen in the heart of Islington, yogabase teaches you to bend and breathe in all the right places. It's the place to head for pure Iyengar yoga - at whatever level of expertise you are.
Iyengar Yoga is a derivative of Hatha yoga - meaning it's physical in nature and engages the breath but, unlike Ashtanga (or "power" types), it is not dynamic or "free flowing". You are taught to master each pose carefully, and hold it perhaps longer than you would in other classes. The use of supports, belts, blankets and mats is also encouraged to enable you to experience the poses more accurately - those familiar with sun salutations may find themselves having to adjust.
The yogabase Centre offers Iyengar purists a mini-heaven in an urban hell. While the buses zoom up and down the Liverpool Rd, all is peace and quiet and Zen-like inside. The downstairs studio is spotlessly clean, with plenty of equipment on hand, and there's even underfloor heating.
Beginners are more than welcome, as classes cater for every level.
