Ragged School Museum
Dr Barnardo's ragged school in Mile End provided free education for local children from 1877 to 1908. The largest in London, it occupied three canalside warehouses. Today these have been turned into the Ragged School Museum, tracing the fascinating history of East End life.
The first section of the museum - Tower Hamlets: A Journey Through Time - follows the development of the borough's six districts (Bow, Poplar, Wapping and Limehouse, Whitechapel and Spitalfields, Stepney and Mile End, Bethnal Green) from their origins to the present.
Visitors can also experience the building's original use in the Victorian Schoolroom, where the strict teaching methods of the time are still in use. A reconstructed 1900s front room completes the experience. A number of volunteers are on hand to share their own experiences of the East End.
Special events take place during the school holidays and at weekends for visitors of all ages - please visit the museum's website for details.
