Minack Theatre Summer Season
Minack is Cornish for "rocky place" and Minack Theatre, high above Porthcurno's beach, lives up to the name. With the sea and stars as backdrops a trip to Minack, near Penzance, can be magical.
Founded, and nurtured between 1932 and her death in 1983, by Derbyshire-born Rowena Cade, after her back garden was the site for a production of Shakespeare's Tempest overlooking the sea.
There's a different show each week during summer, performed by amateurs and visiting companies, ending with Minack Proms. In 2011 there are two Shakespeare's Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing; classics like Cyrano de Bergerac, The Lion in Winter and Our Town, musicals (Guys and Dolls and Fiddler on the Roof as well as Opera (Madam Butterfly and, appositely The Pirates of Penzance) and new plays.
