Portobello Film Festival

Founded in 1996, the Portobello Film Festival has been described as "London's biggest filmic free-for-all". The large independent film festival screens new shorts and features, cult movies and more at various locations around Notting Hill's Portobello area, including Westbourne Studios.

The festival usually features around 600 brand-new movies from around the world, interactive sessions with producers and directors, poetry, performance, music and themed film evenings. Street magicians and circus artists appear throughout the event in the courtyard outside the cinema at Westbourne Studios, and at the kids' weekend in the park at Portobello Green.

Guy Ritchie and Shane Meadows are among the filmmakers to have found their first platform at this event and the free screenings make for big audiences - around 15,000 people every year. This being Notting Hill, there's also a popular emphasis on music and VJs, with the festival atmosphere being supported by the various bars and cafes that populate this corner of London.
