Natural History Museum
South Kensington's iconic Natural History Museum is home to millions of specimens, from huge dinosaur skeletons to tiny precious gems. Learn about volcanoes and earthquakes in the interactive Power Within gallery and watch scientists at work in the Darwin Centre.
The museum is divided into four zones, Blue, Green, Red and Orange. The Red Zone studies the geological history of Planet Earth, with exhibits on volcanoes, rock formations, precious gems and a virtual earthquake simulator. Visitors can even bring their own fossil finds for experts to decipher and interpret in the Earth Lab.
The Green and Blue zones are home to the famous displays of dinosaurs and mammals, including the incredible life-size reconstruction of a blue whale. Steer clear of the interactive Creepy-Crawlies exhibition if you're feeling squeamish.
The Orange Zone is home to the Darwin Centre, which underwent extensive reconstruction and reopened in September 2009. Take a tour of the cocoon-shaped building to see world-class scientists at work in the laboratories. Also in the Orange Zone is the Wildlife Garden, home to thousands of British plants and animals.
