Tate Britain
The Tate Gallery in London consists of two parts: the transformed Bankside Power Station that is Tate Modern, and the renovated, reorganised and expanded Tate Britain, at the original Millbank site. Tate Britain shows off the Tate's vast collection of British art - arguably the greatest in the world.
Vast amounts of the Tate's permanent collection had lain in the gallery's vaults for years. Occasionally the pictures got to see the light, but always at the expense of another masterpiece being whipped away from public view. The recent transformation of the site included the creation of the Sainsbury Exhibition Galleries for temporary shows, and display space has been increased by 35%.
Exhibitions are designed around themes as well as chronology, enabling thought-provoking contrasts and startling juxtapositions between old and new. Here you can see old masters and Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the same building as work by modern and contemporary artists, such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Rachel Whiteread. Highlights include Millais's Ophelia, Waterhouse's The Lady of Shalott and Norham Castle by Turner.
The gallery is also host to the annual Turner Prize exhibition.
