Scottish Opera in Aberdeen
Scottish Opera's summer visit to Aberdeen's His Majesty's Theatre brings Anthony Besch's production of Puccini's "shabby little shocker" Tosca. Susannah Glanville stars in the title role, with José Ferrero as Cavaradossi, Robert Poulton as Scarpia and music director Francesco Croti in the pit.
Police chief Scarpia is hell-bent on re-capturing the escaped Angelotti. He arrests both artist Cavaradossi, convinced he has helped the fugitive, and Cavaradossi's actress girlfriend Tosca. She pleads for Cavaradossi's life and Scarpia agrees, if he can have his way with her.
Convinced he has signed the reprieve, Tosca stabs Scarpia, but realises at the execution that he didn't rescind the order to the firing squad. Cavaradossi dies and, fleeing from soldiers in hot pursuit, Tosca, famously throws herself off the Castello d'Angelo's ramparts.
