York Festival of Traditional Dance
Dance troupes from throughout the country join in York for its Festival of Traditional Dance. This is York's most lively festivals and a showcase of the diversity and expressiveness of Britain's indigenous dance styles.
The festival begins with a colourful dance procession on the Saturday, which winds its way from the Guildhall to Parliament Square. From there teams dance in King's Square and St Sampson's Square before displaying their skills at a grand show for dignitaries. Sunday's dancing continues with less pressure and less formality, giving spectators the chance to see some of the country's most unusual dances. Previous years have seen performances from the stick and hanky Morris of the Cotswolds, the intricate weaving Yorkshire Longsword, and the Welsh border Morris.
