National Monuments Record Centre

The National Monuments Record Centre (NMRC) in Swindon is the public archive of English Heritage. The historic collections held here include over ten million documents, photos and plans of architecture, archaeology, listed buildings, aerial photography and social history throughout England.

The centre has a Public Search Room and the English Heritage Reference Library, both of which are open to the public. There's even a cafe to recharge after all that research.
