World Pipe Band Championships

The world's biggest bagpipe event is held in the centre of Glasgow, bringing together traditional pipe bands from around the world. Drummers and dancers also compete at the World Pipe Band Championships on Glasgow Green.

The influence of the Celtic sound is so widespread that there are said to be more pipe bands in New York than in the whole of Scotland. Indeed, 16 nations regularly enter from as far afield as Canada and Oman (whose pipers usually play on camel-back).

The Championships, which include the Glasgow World Highland Games, take place towards the end of the annual Piping Live! festival over in George Square.
