Ely Cathedral
Etheldreda (d 679), daughter of Anna, king of East Anglia, restored an old church in Ely and built a monastery on the site where Ely Cathedral now lies. After a restoration in 970, it became England's second richest abbey.
The monastic church became Ely Cathedral in 1109 - however the monastery was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. Statues, carvings and stained glass and even St Etheldreda's Shrine were destroyed during this period. The cathedral was refounded again in 1541 and the first major restoration took place in the 18th century. The most recent and most extensive restoration was completed in 2000.
