West Yorkshire Playhouse
On Leeds centre's eastern edge, award-winning West Yorkshire Playhouse, which opened in 1990 has two auditoria, the Quarry and Courtyard Theatres. It hosts visiting productions as well as longer-running home-grown productions, amidst ballet, comedy and workshops.
Celebrating coming-of-age in 2011, West Yorkshire Playhouse's own productions this spring (after seasonal Christmas Carol and Aladdin to 15 January) start with Terrence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea in his centenary year (Quarry, 18 February-12 March). In the Courtyard Llorca's Yerma (5-26 March) and Aisha Khan's No Man's Land (29 April-9 May) are followed by John Ford's revenge tragedy 'Tis Pity She's A Whore (7-28 May) in the Quarry. The summer heralds musical version of The Wizard of Oz, simply called The Wiz (24 June-16 July).
Visiting companies include Hull Truck, Northern Broadsides (Hamlet) and Told by an Idiot.
