Oxford Castle Unlocked
Built in 1071 for William the Conqueror, Oxford Castle was once a royal residence, a centre for justice and then a prison, up until 1996. The castle's dark history of violence, executions and escapes is now revealed to visitors.
Early on in the castle's prison days, Oxford University's "rebellious scholars" were locked up. Over the centuries it became notorious for its appalling conditions.
Visitors walk through centuries of history during their tour through the grounds and enjoy sweeping views of Oxford from the Saxon St George's Tower.
