Knebworth House
Mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1085 as "Chenepeword", meaning a village on a hill, Hertfordshire's Knebworth House has been in the Lytton family since 1490. Once a huge red-brick Tudor house, it is now a towering gothic mansion.
In the early 17th century, Mrs Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton modernised the house in the style of the time, but despite its Gothic facade the building still retains architectural features reaching significantly further back.
Inside, the house is crammed with heirlooms spanning centuries, while the sprawling gardens are equally impressive in their scale and grandeur. More recently the grounds have held concerts attracting up to 125,000 people, giving some indication of how expansive the site actually is.
Please note: be sure to check the Knebworth House website for the opening times before you go, as these vary from month to month.
