London Sugar and Slavery
The Museum in Docklands' new gallery, London Sugar and Slavery offers an insight into the world of slaves and their owners, with particular emphasis on London's role in the slave trade and later its abolition.
The exhibition brings to light the capital's role in the slave trade, demonstrating that the financial successes of 17th-century Britain were often at the expense of the transatlantic slave trade. But Londoners are also seen in a sympathetic light - the museum shows how people from all classes and backgrounds in the capital fought in the face of much resistance for slavery's abolition.
An important insight into the relationship between owner and slave can be understood by reading extracts from the papers of Thomas and John Mills, owners of plantations in St Kitts and Nevis, while objects, films, art and music provide a moving portrait of the lives of the slaves themselves.
Please visit the museum's website for further information.
