Hotels near the Exeter Cathedral

It's no surprise that Exeter is known as the "Cathedral City" - the 12th-century edifice is a highlight for visitors. Check out the vaulted ceiling and great clock inside, and the antique shops in the pretty streets surrounding the building.

The astronomical clock is more than 500 years old, while the Great Organ has been in its original position since 1665. Music was an important part of liturgical services as the Minstrel's Gallery proves, with its carvings of angels playing 14th-century instruments. Its ceiling stretches unbroken for 100 metres.

Other highlights include a huge medieval window with 19 full-length figures including Sidwell, the local saint, and a 15th-century wall painting.

Around the north and south wall of the Nave are cushions, on the original stone plinths, which depict the history of the cathedral, city and country from Roman times to the present day. Outside, the two massive Norman towers dominate.

The cathedral is not open for visits on Sundays but you are welcome to attend the services.
