Inveraray Castle
Inveraray Castle is the home of the Clan Campbell Chief MacCailien Mor. The land it sits on was a gift to the Campbells in the 11th century and they have been Dukes of Argyll since 1701.
The initial design for the castle was made in 1720 by Sir John Vanbrugh, the noted architect who also designed the spectacular Blenheim Palace. But it was Archibald, the Third Duke, who in 1743 masterminded the present multi-turreted mock-Gothic castle.
The castle stands in two acres of landscaped garden and is rectangular, with battlemented drum towers at each corner. Inside, visitors can tour the armoury (at 95 feet, claimed to be the tallest room in Scotland) and the second-floor state dining room.
