Royal National Mod
The Royal National Mod (Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail) is the largest Gaelic festival in Scotland. The Mod is held in a different place each time. In 2011, it takes place across the Western Isles, for the fifth time.
First held in 1892 at Oban, the Mod has taken place annually ever since, apart from its cancellation during war years. In 2003 it returned to Oban for the 100th festival.
Centred on Gaelic solo and choral singing and music competitions (including the Scottish harp - the Clársach) expect music, song, drama, dance and literature. Entries for competitors have to be in by the end of May, after which there is a season of feverish rehearsals to be the best by competition time!
