Argyllshire Highland Gathering (Oban Games)

Dating back to 1871, the Argyllshire Highland Gathering at Oban's Mossfield Park is one of the Highland Games' elder statesmen. After marching from town to the games ground, the "heavy" games commence: shot putt, hammer throwing and caber tossing.

Harking back to the days of the warrior clans, large men in tartan sweat profusely as they hurl large objects as far as they can. Team sports include tug-of-war and relay as well as a shinty display (described as "wild hockey"), while the Scottish dancing includes the traditional sword dance.

The day before, across various venues, Ceol Mor ("the great music") is a day of competition for the world's best pipers.
