Houses of Parliament

Qualified guides offer guided tours around the Palace of Westminster, home to the world's oldest parliamentary democracy. Visitors can explore this historic building and its many treasures.

The Houses of Parliament include the two highest political chambers in the land - the House of Commons where MPs sit to represent their constituents - and the House of Lords - a mixture of those who've had greatness thrust upon them and others who have achieved it. Together they vote on legislation passed by the House of Commons before which it cannot become law.

Tours start at the Sovereign's Entrance (Victoria Tower) where the Queen's robing room is situated and continue through the Royal Gallery, the Chamber of the House of Lords, the Peers' Lobby and then from the Central Lobby to the Chamber of the House of Commons.

The Victorian Gothic Revival monolith astride Westminster Bridge is probably most famous for its clocktower - Big Ben - and was designed between 1840 and 1888 by Charles Barry.
