Bede's World
The extraordinary life of the Venerable Bede, a 7th-century monk and chronicler of early Christianity, is celebrated at Bede's World in Jarrow, where he lived and worked.
Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which he completed in AD 731, remains the foremost account of the coming of Christianity to England. Bede's World brings to life the conditions and circumstances in which he compiled his narrative. The interactive Age of Bede museum is a permanent exhibition which displays archaeological findings including pottery, carvings, early examples of coloured window glass and the monks' personal belongings. Quotes from Bede's writings, videos and reconstruction models help bring the period to life.
Visitors can also see the site of the Anglo-Saxon monastery of St Paul's, founded by Northumbrian nobleman Benedict Biscop, enjoy a stroll through the herb garden, designed in the style of a typical medieval garden, and head for the Anglo-Saxon demonstration farm to see rare breeds of sheep, pigs and cows.
