Hotels near the Ullswater

Ullswater is the second-largest expanse of water in the Lake District (only topped by Windermere). Poet William Wordsworth was inspired by the daffodils at Glencoyne Bay to write his most famous poem, I wandered lonely as a cloud, and the lake is still an inspiration to thousands of visitors every year, either sailing on the water or walking around it.

Seven-and-a-half miles long, Ullswater is surrounded by great fells: High Rise and High Street to the east, separating it from Haweswater, and Helvellyn to the south-west, separating it from Thirlmere. The name means Ulf's water, Ulf being a Nordic chief in Viking days. From Pooley Bridge at its north end to Glenridding at the south, it is roughly three-quarters of a mile wide throughout its length, with a maximum depth of 205 feet.

Ideal for walks of all standards, Ullswater is also a haven for water activities. Donald Campbell was based at Glenridding for many years and broke the 200mph world water speed record here. Nowadays, Ullswater Steamers' slower boats are perfect for a lake cruise.
