Hotels near the Truro Cathedral

Construction works on this majestic building started in 1880 on the site of the 16th century St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, and were completed in 1910. Dr Benson, the Bishop at the time, appointed architect John Pearson to create something quite spectacular and yet different from the styles of other cathedrals in England.

Hence, the architectural style is Gothic revival, featuring interior walls made of Cornish granite and pillars from Bath stone. The cathedral's most striking features are its towers and spires, which rise up to 250 feet and dominate Truro's skyline.

Other oustanding items include the Baptistry dedicated to Henry Martyn, the Tinworth Panel built in terracotta by George Tinworth, the famous Father Willis organ and the stained glass windows, which are considered to be some of the finest examples of Victorian stained glass.

Although expensive renovation works are currently in process, entrance is still free to visitors, whose numbers in recent years have escalated to half a million.
