Almeida Theatre
The Almeida Theatre is one of London's production powerhouses, with star casts, interesting plays and more than its fair share of West End and Broadway transfers. Each summer, it hosts a festival of contemporary opera, music and theatre.
Originally built in 1837 as the Islington Literary & Scientific Institution, the building became a music hall and then, at the turn of the century, a Salvation Army citadel. In 1980, when director Pierre Audi recognised its intimate qualities, the Almeida Theatre was born.
After Audi left in 1990, it fell to both Jonathan Kent and Ian McDiarmid to fashion an innovative producing house, presenting acclaimed shows such as The Iceman Cometh with Kevin Spacey and a clutch of award-winning Edward Albee productions, including a revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
