Walker Art Gallery
Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery is home to a fine collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture and decorative art from the 14th to the 20th centuries. It is also one of the city's most important venues for temporary exhibitions.
The gallery houses Italian and Dutch paintings from 1350-1550 and European art from 1550-1900, including works by Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas. The British art includes Victorian painting and Pre-Raphaelite works, prints, drawings and watercolours, one of the most important sculpture collections outside London and 20th-century works by Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Gilbert and George.
The gallery was founded in 1819 when the Liverpool Royal Institution bought 37 paintings from prominent Liverpudlian collector William Roscoe. In 1851, the Liverpool Academy was founded to take over the collection.
