RRS Discovery
The Royal Research Ship Discovery is moored at Dundee's Discovery Point on the Firth of Tay. It is most famous for taking Captain Scott on his first expedition to the South Pole in the year of its launch - 1901.
RRS Discovery was the last wooden ship built in Britain. 172 feet long, she was built of oak and elm, with strengthened bows for forcing her way through polar ice. On board you'll find artefacts including the ship's original organ and a sea chest.
The ship forms the centrepiece of the Discovery Point Antarctic Museum and as well as the RRS Discovery there are exhibitions about the building of the ship, the provisioning for its journey to the Antarctic, and how the National Antarctic Expedition withstood the extreme conditions.
