St Augustine's Abbey

This abbey in Canterbury was founded by St Augustine in AD597, marking the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a museum and a free audio tour.

Originally created as a burial place for the Saxon kings of Kent, today the museum has a display of around 250 excavated objects, and in the ruins of the abbey itself, visitors can see signs of its destruction and subsequent rebuilding, particularly following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. As well as ruins of both Saxon and Norman churches, there are remains of Tudor brickwork from a former royal palace built by Henry VIII.
