Hunterian Art Gallery
The Hunterian Art Gallery - the art collection wing of the wider William Hunter bequest to the University of Glasgow - is housed a short walk from the main museum, on the opposite side of University Avenue. Famous for its bequests of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and Charles Rennie Macintosh (1868-1928), it also has fine collections of Scottish Colourists as well as local artists, collectively known as the Glasgow Boys. The Museum is reopening in May 2007 after extensive renovations. However, the Art Gallery, Mackintosh House and Zoology Museum are all still open as usual.
With 80 oils, hundreds of sketches and over 2000 prints, the Whistler collection, based on his Estate, is one of the pre-eminent collections of his work, which also includes furniture, ceramics, silver and personalia once owned by the American artist.
The distinctive style, quintessentially Art Nouveau, of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald Macintosh is represented by the largest single collection of his work, and the Hunterian has also restored 78 Southpark Avenue - the Macintosh House - to its former glory, reflecting its decor when the couple lived there between 1908 to 1914. The collection includes 800 drawings, designs and watercolours, as well as furniture and decorative art, correspondence, photographs and periodicals.
The Scottish Colourists are represented by some 100 works, including paintings by the likes of John Duncan Fergusson, Samuel John Peploe, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Boileau Campbell Cadell, while the Glasgow Boys and Girls collection of over 200 works includes paintings by George Henry, Alexander Herrington Mann, Edward Atkinson Hornel, Stansmore Dean and David Gauld.
