Hotels near the Derwent Valley Heritage Way

For those that like the outdoor life, the Derwent Valley Heritage Way offers the chance to explore a 55-mile stretch of Derbyshire through fields and along woodland paths and tracks.

The route, which includes just a few pavements and roads, starts from Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District National Park, passes Chatsworth (the finest stately home in England), the Derbyshire Dales and the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, travelling along the riverside path through Derby and on to the inland port of Shardlow.

Hikers can enjoy any part of the trail in smaller or larger sections, staying in campsites, B&Bs, guesthouses and youth hostels along the way (information is available from tourist information offices). This is a more-or-less easy route, but it can get sodden depending on the weather.

The Upper Derwent Valley section, however, is recommended for cyclists as there is are bike hire centres in Fairholmes, near Bamford, and various cycle routes and trails around the reservoirs and towards Hathersage. There is also a 17.5-mile (28km) stretch along the High Peak Trail and another bike hire shop in Carsington Water. Derby City Council and tourism office can provide a full cycle route guide.
