Godiva Festival
Every July, Coventry's War Memorial Park hosts a lavish festival of free entertainment to celebrate the city's historic connection with Lady Godiva. There's live music and a procession of a scantily clad Godiva, riding through the streets to the park.
Countess Godiva was the wife of the powerful Leofric, Earl of Mercia, in the early 11th century. She felt the tax burden on the townspeople was punitive and pleaded with her husband to be more lenient. He said he would do so, on the condition she mounted a horse and rode through the streets naked. Every citizen turned their eyes to the wall to protect her modesty, except for naughty Peeping Tom, who was struck blind - whether by Lady Godiva's henchmen or by God is unrecorded.
