Newcastle's ancient Castle Keep is a three-storey building which houses a museum, charting the life and times of the Normans and explaining the city's history.

Newcastle's history encompasses both Roman occupation and Norman invasions. The castle gave the city its name after having been built over an old Roman site in 1080 by William the Conqueror's eldest son.

The Castle Keep is not widely publicised despite the wealth of information and objects within its walls. The building is full of intriguing staircases that lead to all sorts of places, including the roof, for amazing views of the city. Explore the luxurious Queen's Chambers or the creaky old Great Hall. The lower floors are spookier still - with a Norman chapel right next to the dungeon, cannon balls, musket balls, and even Norman gravestones dating back to before the castle was built.
