So, it has come to that time in my life when I have had to wave a tearful goodbye to my fun loving twenties and face facts that my 30s have just hit me like a derailed train! Amongst the pain, angst and worry about will those bits really start to sag, will life still be fun and can I still wear that at my age without looking like a tart on a promise, a slow realisation sank in that this means a whole host of 30th birthday parties. Yes, as most of my friends are the same age as me they too would be turning 30 at the same time and celebrating/commiserating too.
Could this be the silver lining to this seemingly dark cloud?
Now, having my birthday at the start of the school year means that I am officially the eldest of my group of friends. So, it was my responsibility to start the birthday year off in style. And that I did. The last meet of the York races just so happened to fall on my actual birthday – what luck! A full day of champers, posh dresses, winning bets and of course unsuitable high heels – well it was the races!
After that the party invites really started to roll in with so many different things to do to celebrate entering our fourth decade. Weekend breaks in the Lake District hotels, cheerleading lessons, BBQ with hog roast, exclusive bar hired for the evening, night out in Manchester and the classic music and buffet bonanza.
Then it was the turn of my best friend. By this point I was thinking Ibiza could be on the cards. And then she dropped the (exciting) news – she was pregnant. This meant a quieter celebration was a foot. After weeks of deliberation a decision was made – the next 30th would be a spa day at the Best Western Dower House Hotel in Knaresborough. Hmm, maybe a day away from the stresses of everyday life relaxing with the girls would be exactly what I needed – and I was totally right.
When we arrived we were greeted by the beauty team who gave us drinks, a light breakfast, bath robes and some slippers. We then went into the brand new spa centre and we were instantly in awe. A swimming pool, sauna, steam room, ice bath, pedicure area with sea salt and sand, sun loungers and a Jacuzzi all ours for the day. Believe me; you can actually spend a whole day doing nothing! Of course we all had an hour’s treatment as part of the package – I had a hot stone massage and exfoliation treatment. To be honest I cannot remember much of it as after the champagne lunch, handmade chocolates and afternoon tea the massage sent me to sleep in seconds – ah bliss.
I have to say that maybe my thirties are not going to be so bad after all.
