It was only when an internet search for Swansea hotels brought up Catherine Zeta-Jones that I realised quite how many stars hail from this Welsh gem of a town! Did you know that it is the home town of Dylan Thomas? Plus it’s just a few miles from the birthplace of a host of mega-stars including Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton and Tom Jones. Impressive, huh?
Now why am I searching for a hotel in Swansea you may ask? Well, wedding bells are ringing in the town for my cousin and not going would cause a family feud of epic proportions so… off to Wales we go! Obviously, being a ‘Best Westerner’, I will be staying at the BEST WESTERN Aberavon Beach Hotel with its lovely beach side location and swanky rooms, not to mention the swimming pool and Jacuzzi. I have to say though, after a few moments on the old tinterweb, I am pretty excited about a road trip to the land of the leeks!
Once the enforced socialising is over however, we’ll be hopping on our bikes to explore the ‘golden coast’ of Wales. First of all we’ll be taking to the Celtic Trail – a fantastic cycle route that runs along the coast showcasing most of the 50 beaches on the Gower peninsula, including Rhossili Bay, the ‘supermodel of British beaches’ according to The Independent. On the top of my to do list will have to be the seaside town of Mumbles – I couldn’t come so close to a town with such a comedy name without getting the obligatory picture of the road sign. Child you may shout, and yes, sadly you would be right!
But wait, all this talk of exercise is making me very hungry. If you are a foodie like me you will heave a sigh of relief to hear that not only are there hoards of lovely eateries in this area of Wales but that they specialise in cockles, oysters, cheeses and laverbread. A trip to Swansea market is the first stop me thinks!
