Could there be anything more British than afternoon tea? Now I know that there are all those reports that say our nation’s most popular dish is now curry and all that but seriously I still believe that afternoon tea could quite possibly be our most iconic nosh. In fact, leave our roast dinners and Yorkie puds to one side as the tourists indeed speak for themselves. The Americans queue for hours not to grab a roast spud or a lamb bhuna but to sample the delights of a good old British cream tea!
To be honest I have a very sweet tooth so it does not take much to twist my arm into the tempting world of cakes and chocolate. In fact, to make myself feel better for eating naughty treats I accompany them with having a cup of tea or coffee – which makes it, in my book, all ok to indulge!
So, when the Best Western Mosborough Hall Hotel in Sheffield launched their Champagne afternoon tea I could not resist trying this little delicacy out. How amazing does it sound – afternoon tea with homemade fruit scones, clotted cream, jam, a selection of sandwiches, an assiette of miniature desserts and champers – how very lady who lunches!
Well, of course I took the girlies with me (there is nothing worse than tea for one!) and hop footed it down to this historic hotel. As we drove into the hotel grounds it was very exciting, the hotel itself is a manor so perfect for this very British afternoon tea indulgent situation I found myself in!
After sitting down in the newly opened conservatory bar we stared in awe as an army of staff appeared with tiers of sandwiches and cakes on quaint little tea stands. I was like a kid in a sweet shop! The food was luscious and I will certainly be going back for more soon but this time with someone else and the designated driver so I can fully take advantage of the bubbly on offer!
If you fancy trying this out then the hotel have afternoon teas ranging from £3.95 per person for the standard scones and tea to the £14.95 per person champagne option. It’s available all day from 10am until 6pm – just make sure you’re in the passenger seat!
