Sunday morning, I found myself feeling very delicate after a Best Western employee 21st birthday celebration and was looking forward to my eagerly awaited visit to Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel, yet dreading the two and a half hour drive in the very unexpected Northern April heat!
After taking the scenic route, we arrived just after 3pm to discover the sun still shining and a very welcoming receptionist. I was directed to my room in the annexe, which being with my mum and 10 year old sister, I was happy to discover was an executive suite with half partition. Extremely spacious, modern with flat screen plasma, king bed and sofa bed (with second pull out had we not wanted to share the king).
Being in the heart of Ambleside, we took advantage of the afternoon sun and took a stroll. 2 miles later we found ourselves at the edge of the beautiful Lake Windermere, where there were people rowing boats, children paddling and everyone enjoying ice-cream! We joined in the ice-cream bit!
After a leisurely stroll back, it was decided we deserved a trip to the spa before dinner. With full swimming pool, sauna, hot and cold experience, the options were all there. We were ready to hit the Jacuzzi but discovered the Canadian outdoor hot tub was an absolute luxury. Although by this time it was shaded, to enjoy this experience in England and in April was very unexpected.
Getting ready for dinner, my mum and sister were very excited to find the complimentary robes and slippers (it’s the simple things) in the wardrobe which in winter would have been a welcomed bonus.
The bathroom appeared to have just been fitted the day before especially for us, it was so white, fresh, clean and spacious. My sister enjoyed the Jacuzzi bath, while I was impressed with the size of the showerhead in the walk-in shower, it felt like a waterfall.
Being with a child and being a fussy eater myself, I was a little worried about the dining options, but was relieved to find a full children’s menu and more than enough options on the Bistro menu. We enjoyed two courses each but most importantly, it being a Sunday, my mum craved her weekly roast, which luckily was available on the specials board and to quote “best beef eaten in a long time” and surprisingly served with a Yorkshire pudding (yes, in The Lakes!).
After a long day, we retired to bed for a very restful sleep!
Before check-out, we were greeted at breakfast by the same friendly waiter as the night before (when did he sleep?), to a continental buffet and made to order full cooked breakfast, enjoyed by my mum, black pudding an’ all!
The Best Western Ambleside Salutation is a beautiful Lake District hotel, you couldn’t ask for anything more from a retreat/holiday experience. Friendly staff, lovely guest rooms, good food and luxurious spa facilities, it’s a shame we weren’t there for longer!
