We’ve all heard the term ‘Busman’s Holiday’ where people combine their leisure time with a spot of work, well occasionally I like to do quite the opposite, and use my working time for a spot of leisure (Well after / before the work is done obviously!).
Staying overnight at the hotels I work with serves two purposes: I get to sample the guest experience, and look for ways to improve guest satisfaction. But also logistically this gives me more time to work, rather than stuck in the morning rush-hour traffic!
After a productive meeting at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Ullesthorpe Court Hotel, I moved on to my destination for the night. Early next morning my schedule was meetings, at the BEST WESTERN Normanton Park Hotel on the banks of Rutland Water. I had mentioned to another Hotel manager that I enjoy a spot of fishing, and was invited to spend the evening at the Tuesday night fly fishing boat league. Now being more of a carp / course angler fisher, I was scared that my inexperience of fly fishing would show me up….. I needn’t have worried.
Under expert guidance of my host I was taken out to the furthest reaches of the reservoir (apparently the largest in Europe!) passing the stunning lakeside properties and scenery, and anchored up in a bay fishing towards the bank. Fishing “The Bung” and buzzers method it wasn’t long before I had a bite, my experience of playing big carp came in handy as I guided the 2.7lb hard fighting rainbow trout to the net, no easy task on a light rod. Ironically I caught this “Rainbow” while sat under the most stunning rainbow after a sudden shower.
Another fish followed shortly after, before my host (The General manager of BEST WESTERN Marks Tey Hotel) had even got one in the boat, 2 nil to central office I thought with a wry smile!
As the evening drew to a close with just five minutes fishing time left before, we had to take the boat back in for the weigh in I hooked and caught my third trout. Aware that catching the three fish limit would put me in with a chance of being among the top anglers on the day, it made for a very nervous and cautious fight before slipping the net under a beautiful browny. (Giving me a 3-2 lead over my host.)
I was more than happy with just catching a fish, but imagine my surprise when at the weigh in It was announced that I had the best total weight of Fish. I think it may have ruffled a few feathers among the locals, that the new kid on the block (well, 40 year old youngster) had beaten them all to the evening prize. Oh, and the prize? A free full days fishing and boat hire on Rutland water for me and my Fiancé, we will be seeing BEST WESTERN Normanton Park Hotel again very soon! Although this time it will be on my time over a weekend.
