There is nothing as exhilarating (or for me, as terrifying) as the sheer power of a plane taking off – the ferocity of the engine, the reverberation as 74,840kgs of metal propels into the air and takes flight.
Heart pounding and my travel companions hand now crushed, I can now relax as my favourite part of the experience begins; the views.
Floating hundreds of miles in the air, whose breath isn’t taken away as you swoop through the clouds? Marvel at the wind turbines resembling toy windmills at the beach, or the ships on the sea reminiscent of toys in a bath? The thrill of witnessing a thunder storm taking place in the far distance. Lightening splitting the sky and illuminating the cabin with the thunder making your seat shake.
Yet despite all of this wonder, for me the preferred method of the plane experience is a visit to IWM Duxford which holds fond memories for me.
Rich in history and with so much to see and to do, it has been an amazing experience on every one of the visits I made as a child with school or with my parents. How else will you be able to say you’ve been on a Concorde these days? Or get up close and personal with WW1 and WW2 planes that helped protect our country?
Why not make the most of your visit to IWM Duxford, by staying at BEST WESTERN PLUS The Gonville Hotel? This hotel is the perfect base for the museum, Cambridge and the rest of Cambridgeshire!
