A Wedding Expedition To Remember

There is a strong argument that one of the greatest expeditions you can experience is tying the knot. And with many weddings occurring at Best Western Hotels, we have accumulated lots of fantastic stories around this momentous day. Here are our “wedding stories with personality”.

50 couples for 50 years

BEST WESTERN PREMIER Yew Lodge Hotel & Conference Centre in Kegworth has been hosting wedding receptions since it opened in 1957. To celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2007, the hotel set out to track down one couple who had held their wedding at BEST WESTERN PREMIER Yew Lodge Hotel & Conference Centre for each of the 50 years. “We got pretty close,” said Heather Thornton, director of sales and marketing, “but it proved predictably tough the further back we went.” In the end, 37 couples attended a
memorable summer Champagne reception where almost all renewed their vows.

Love is in the air

Love is in the air pretty much all the time at the
BEST WESTERN Strathaven Hotel in Strathaven. There have been at least 25 weddings between staff members over the last 20 years (most held at the hotel), and all of the couples are still together today. It’s clear the staff members don’t only like each other, they enjoy working at the hotel. Perhaps key to the camaraderie is the ‘everyone mucks in’ attitude encouraged by owners Malcolm and Sheila Macintyre. “We multi-task like mad,” says Sheila. “I can be pushing plates, I can be running a wedding; if a job needs to get done, then we’ll muck in and do it. Malcolm was loading the dishwasher the other night because we were suddenly mobbed.” It’s no wonder everyone likes spending so much time here.

Church on the water

The lovely Grade II listed building, St Matthew’s Church, on the shores of Rutland Water is specially licensed for weddings, making the adjacent BEST WESTERN Normanton Park Hotel in Oakham a top choice for local couples looking to tie the knot. The hotel’s grand wedding venue, the Rutland Suite, opens onto lawns, while the bridal suite, the Wansford, boasts a double Jacuzzi and four poster bed, as well as a balcony with views of the lake.
