Best Western’s Chief Executive, David Clarke, has today announced his deep disappointment at the Lyons’ inquiry bed tax outcome by blasting the report for victimising the tourism industry.

If local Government choose to accept Sir Michael Lyons’ recommendations the UK will become the second most taxed country in Europe - a decision that is sure to hit the industry hard and comes at a time when British tourists are increasingly spending more money outside of the UK.

Commenting on the news David Clarke said: “It is inevitable that this new tax will hit independent hotels harder. At Best Western we are actively supporting our hotels to understand not only how it will affect their business but to also give them guidance on continuing to provide a high quality service in the face of loosing revenue.”

At a recent conference David slammed this exact proposal, outlining how it would be detrimental to the British tourism industry and the UK economy as a whole. He actively encouraged the group’s hotel owners across the country to lodge their opposing views directly with their local Government to add weight to the industry’s year-long battle.

Undefeated at the latest news, the largest group of independently owned hotels have today outlined the second wave of its online campaign. A dedicated web page at www.bestwestern.co.uk/bedtax invites hoteliers, as well as members of the public, to join Best Western in campaigning against this proposed tax.

On hearing the decision this morning David Clarke said: “The hotel industry has only recently recovered from a lack of tourism following the London bombings and now the Government has created another obstacle for the industry to face.”

“Holding the Olympics in 2012 will bring in tourism to England, but in the meantime hoteliers will suffer from lack of trade as budget airlines get cheaper and tourists choose to go elsewhere in Europe.”

June Nelsey, Hotel Director of Best Western Monkbar Hotel in York echoes what hoteliers across England are saying in the wake of the decision: “The ever increasing competition and new low fare flights to Europe, together with a strong UK economy, means that cities across the UK are already struggling to compete in the tourism sector.”

“The bed tax will be another nail in the tourism coffin and it is bitterly disappointing that the Government has yet again failed to recognise the vital role that tourism plays right across the country.”

Best Western is the largest group of independently owned hotels in GB, with over 290 predominantly three and four-star hotels throughout England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands.

Research by First Place, the free conference and venue finding service from Best Western, has revealed that tired and overused motivational songs, such as ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner, are guaranteed to have an adverse affect on delegates.

Surveying British workers, First Place revealed that, ironically, two of Labour’s once lauded pre-victory anthems, Heather Small’s ‘Proud’ and top of the worst conference tunes list ‘Things can only get better’ by D:Ream, were overwhelmingly voted as two of the least motivational songs of all time.

However, for delegates who can’t get enough of ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra, First Place has also put together a chart of the best and worst motivational music as well as some simple top tips on its website www.firstplace.co.uk/toptips, offering live streaming of the tracks. So, ‘pop picking’ organisers can listen first hand to the official business conferencing chart to get their conference off on the right note. The results are as follows:

Top five most motivational songs:
1.	Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
2.	Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow – Fleetwood Mac
3.	No Limits – 2 Unlimited
4.	Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong
5.	We are the champions – Queen

Top five least motivational/ overused conference songs:
1.	Things can only get better – D:Ream
2.	Simply the Best – Tina Turner
3.	Proud - M People
4.	Let me Entertain you – Robbie Williams
5.	My Way – Frank Sinatra

The importance of well chosen music was further underlined when 40% highlighted that poorly chosen music had a negative effect on how they perceived a speaker. The study also looked into preferred speakers with almost one in three choosing a comedian, leaving ‘the boss’ in penultimate place, just above a politician.

The research further revealed that positively, one in three felt more knowledgeable after their last conference or meeting. However, 15% left feeling hung over having put more efforts into enjoying the free booze and entertainment…with a saucy 2% of hot-blooded delegates taking away a new love interest!

As a result of these findings, First Place, who search all big brand hotels to find you a venue in under 2 hours, has teamed up with GMTV’s motivational guru, Pete Cohen to give you expert hints and tips on creating the best conference to leave your delegates positively enthused. The web page www.firstplace.co.uk/toptips not only features the live streaming, but also Pete’s top tips, research findings and a comprehensive venue guide to hundreds of hotels across Great Britain.

Pete Cohen commented, “In all stages of business it is highly important that motivating colleagues and delegates is made a top priority. The research conducted by First Place has highlighted the significance of this key business ingredient which must be added alongside a perfect venue, ambiance, food, temperature, speakers, music and of course content to raise the perfect inspirational conference.”

Mikhaila Brentnall, PR Manager at Best Western commented: “The research findings came as a real surprise, with classics coming out top against the likes of Robbie Williams.”

Best Western Hotels today revealed its plan to stop parents despairing at how to entertain the kids without breaking the bank - a summer of educational family fun.

With the average summer holiday lasting an impressive six weeks, Best Western Hotels GB responded to desperate pleas from parents who wanted to prise their children away from the TV without spending their life savings trying to avoid the dreaded phrase, ‘I’m bored’.

There are an estimated 8.5 million school-aged children in the UK, representing an army of young people desperate to be entertained throughout July and August.

In response, the hotel group has devised a selection of itineraries based around four foundational school subjects that are anything but boring. Choose from a selection of family breaks that cover English, Science, History and Geography all downloadable from the company’s dedicated website – www.bestwestern.co.uk/entertainingthekids

Taking in some of Great Britain’s most loved attractions and landmarks, these itineraries have been chosen to coincide with Key Stage One and Two National Curriculum topics, including the Vikings, Victorian England, plant life and space, so kids can learn and have fun at the same time. A selection of 291 three and four-star Best Western hotels are strategically placed along the routes, meaning that a comfy bed and great food can be guaranteed after a hard days learning too.

What’s more, the hotels offer free accommodation for up to two children under 15 sharing a room with two adults.

As the icing on the cake, Best Western Hotels GB is also offering three nights for the price of two at over 100 of its hotels throughout July and August.
Mikhaila Brentnall, PR Manager, Best Western Hotels GB, said: “The school summer holiday is a great opportunity for parents and children alike to spend some quality time together. Many kids feel bored with their endless free time and as a result parents often feel that they need to spend bagfuls of money trying to keep their children entertained.”

“Best Western’s family fun plan offers the perfect antidote to this dilemma, as the whole family can choose from our list of exciting and educational landmarks and attractions, many of which are actually free. It really makes the best use of the long summer holidays that us adults are so envious of!”

“With our three for two offer over the school holidays, kids and adults can learn more for less this summer enjoying some of the wonderful attractions on our doorstep.”
Best Western, Great Britain’s largest group of independently owned and managed hotels, have today predicted that member hotels are set to be taxed an additional £80 million, following the Chancellor scrapping Hotel Buildings Allowance (HBA).

The hotel group reveals the staggering findings after employing independent financial consultants to investigate Gordon Brown’s tax burden on its 292 hotels across England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands.

The survey, taken by Best Western hotel owners, investigated the accumulative cost to those who have invested in their properties. From this, the likely tax increase was estimated in order to prepare hoteliers for the anticipated extra cost due to be incurred.

The results are clear. Due to the significant investments in refurbishments, renovations and extensions in recent years the cost is set to average at almost £30,000 per hotel. Previously this cost could have been offset against future profits. However, as of 2009 this will no longer be the case.

With independent hoteliers already feeling the pinch against big chains, this new taxation is sure to hit these hoteliers harder than ever before – especially those who have already spent money on renovations and are now faced with an unexpected tax bill.

As a result, Best Western are set to fight the independent hoteliers corner and are backing the British Hospitality Association’s campaign to stop the Government abolishing this crucial tax relief on the industry.

Talking about the imposing tax David Clarke, Chief Executive, Best Western Hotels GB said: “When planning buildings and fittings projects to date all hoteliers, not just Best Western, will have budgeted around this tax relief. For the Government to take this away after the project has been completed is extremely unfair on the tourism industry.”

“This is why we are urging all independent hoteliers and members of the public to join with us in supporting the British Hospitality Association’s campaign to stop this from happening.”

“We are as ever hopeful that the Chancellor will see the detrimental effect this will have on the tourism industry and revoke the decision before it takes affect. In the meantime, at Best Western, we are working closely with our members to both guide them through this taxation and aid them in optimising sales to try and offset this increased cost.”

With the British Hospitality Association anticipating that the cost to the tourism industry is likely to reach £500million, the Chancellor’s decision is sure to affect job opportunities and future regeneration in British hotels – something that the Government feel strongly about investing in.

Bob Cotton, Chief Executive, British Hospitality Association said: "The government's decision to abolish HBA could not have come at a worse time as hotel extensions and improvements are essentially a long-term commitment; at the same time, the decision to reduce the allowance on buildings already in construction flies in the face of both fairness and good sense.”

"Investment in provincial towns and rural locations is particularly at risk. Unfortunately, these are the very areas of the country where the government wants us to generate job opportunities.”

"It is mystifying that the withdrawal of the HBA was made without any discussion with the industry - yet it will affect developments which, in many cases need to be financed over a period of many years. We are continuing to lobby Treasury officials to express our deep concerns about this damaging decision and the BHA entirely endorses Best Western's campaign."

If hoteliers would like to join the ever expanding number of hotels already in Best Western membership please contact the membership department on 01904 695460.

Case study

The Best Western Premier Yew Lodge is a family owned hotel based in Kegworth, near East Midlands airport. This hotel has been in the family for over 50 years and has been managed by three generations.

Starting out as a tearoom over 50 years ago the hotel has grown from strength to strength and now boasts 87 ensuite bedrooms and employs 97 members of staff.

In 2003 the hotel underwent an extensive extension and refurbishment programme building 36 ensuite bedrooms, nine conference rooms and a health club and spa.

When outlining the financial plans for the development the IBA tax relief was a crucial element of the budgeting. The hotel spent a total of £4 million on the project and in order to ensure that the expense would be justified and profitable the plan was to offset the cost against future income at the hotel.

Now that the Chancellor has scrapped this tax relief the hotel are facing a heavy tax bill which had not been anticipated.

Jeremy Pick, hotel owner of the Best Western Premier Yew Lodge, said: “Investing in the hotel is an essential part of maintaining the high standards that we are so proud of. Without doing so the hotel would not be able to generate the sales and consequent revenue to continue running the hotel.”

“The decision by the Government to take away the tax relief on building and fittings for hoteliers is worrying for the industry as a whole. At the hotel we have invested heavily keeping our hotel up to date and now are being penalised for doing so.”

“It is unfair of the Government to apply this tax after the event has already occurred and if hoteliers, like myself, had been aware of the cost at the time of the investment financial plans could have been developed differently to allow for this.”
·	47% increase in online sales this year
·	Group bookings almost doubled
·	South East England top bookers of British breaks
·	Over 44,000 extra room bookings

Best Western Hotels have today reported significant increases in sales figures, with web and group bookings almost double that of last year. The recent results clearly show that the unpredictable weather and recent rises in interest rates certainly has not put us Brits off choosing a British break away this summer.

A significant increase in Internet bookings has been one of the major factors in Best Western’s success, along with an increase in the number of hotels joining Best Western and consequent increases of bedrooms in the portfolio. As a result the percentage market share has increased allowing the largest independently owned and managed hotel group to comfortably ascertaining fifth position for leisure*.

Best Western, who currently have 290 three and four star hotels in membership across England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands, saw a further rise in sales with an impressive 47% increase in group bookings since the start of the year.

The sales figures also showed that the hotel group’s customer habits are changing with the reservations call centre sales being marginally down (4%) on last years figures but Internet sales soaring. The shift in general consumer buyer behaviour was noticeable here as the traditional phone call and booking agent has become less popular as customers choose to go online to book their breaks away.

These changes in buying habits may also be a result of the newly developed www.bestwestern.co.uk website, which was re-launched back in January. The rise in traffic logging onto the ‘easy to navigate’ site has resulted in a staggering 43% increase in bookings this year and a further 47% increase in the summer, comparatively to last years figures.

It also seems that the British weather is not putting international visitors off either with bookings from outside Great Britain seeing an increase of over 10% on last year.

Looking at the figures regionally it is clear that certain areas of the country are opting for more British breaks than others. South of London and Brighton are top of the charts when it comes to booking a get away, followed by Birmingham and Nottingham. Compared to last year those who live in central London have had a large boost in British breaks by actually increased their number short breaks by over 25%.

Other factor in Best Western’s success is the number of tactical price and offer led promotions run by consortium group, such as free bottles of wine with evening meals. Sales in package deals have seen a definitive increase with the two for one promotion proving the most popular with consumers this spring.

Talking about the results David Clarke, CEO, Best Western GB said: “We are very pleased with Best Western’s strong position in the market place and delighted at the increase in this years sales figures - especially considering the gloomy British summer weather earlier this summer.”

“It is encouraging to see that redesign of the website and investing in new routes to the market have both made a positive impact with the increase in online sales. We are certainly doing something right both at central office and at all of our individually owned hotels.”

“We have many plans for Best Western over the coming year to increase this market share even further. As one of the top brands in the hotel industry we will endeavour to remain competitive for customers, offering excellent value for money as well as offering the surprisingly individual experience that only Best Western can provide.”

“As a membership consortium it is essential we work with our members, supporting them through any external influencing factors – such as buildings allowance tax. We are working hard with our members and influential bodies to ensure that the increase in sales we have received for our members is not hindered by increases in taxations.”

·	One in seven buy vouchers as gifts
·	Two in five never get to spend them
·	Londoners waste most vouchers

Briton is literally sitting on lost millions as research by Best Western Hotels today reveals the total sum of lost, expired or discarded gift vouchers in Great Britain as almost £400 million* every year - with southern men being the worst offenders!

The research, conducted by Best Western Hotels, found that 43 per cent of Brits have discarded gift vouchers, left them lying unspent around the house, or allowed them to expire - although almost half of those surveyed admitted that they were pleased to receive such a gift.

In response, Best Western Hotels has today launched a nationwide ‘old for new’ voucher exchange to give people from across Great Britain the chance to recoup some of the millions by sending in any expired vouchers.

The survey, conducted by YouGov, also showed that 70 per cent of participants had turned to vouchers as a last resort when stumped for gift ideas for loved ones, with women most likely to choose this seemingly ‘easy’ option.

The gender divide is alive and well too when it comes to wasting vouchers. According to the findings, almost half of all men (48 per cent) have not spent their vouchers, but this figure dropped to only 40 per cent of women showing that the female of the species really do love to spend the most.

There are strong regional differences too with Londoners less likely to spend their vouchers than those from the rest of Great Britain, with almost half confessing that they’ve left them lying around the house or they’ve expired.

In contrast, stereotypes of thrifty northerners might have some basis in truth, as only 40 per cent, had not got around to spending theirs and 60 per cent (the highest for any region) had already splashed out.

The first 200 expired vouchers sent in to Best Western’s postal address (Consort House, Amy Johnson Way, York, YO30 4GP) will receive a £5 pre-loaded Best Western Travel CardTM, which has no ‘use by’ date.

The voucher can be used to pay for anything from accommodation to food and of course those little extras from spa treatments to a round of golf at over 4,200 Best Western Hotels Internationally.

Mikhaila Brentnall, PR Manager, Best Western Hotels GB, said: “In launching our national ‘new for old’ voucher exchange today we want to highlight the lost money lying around British homes from expiring vouchers.”

“Instead of throwing them away why not dig out any expired vouchers from behind the sofa, dust them down and post them to us to grab yourself a free gift voucher to spend in any of our hotels.”

“The Best Western Travel CardTM is pre-loaded and can be used all over the world, meaning that the voucher you give can be used to easily pay for anything from a cup of tea to a break abroad. What’s more, if you’re not sure what to spend it on, you’ve got plenty of time to choose, as they never expire.”

Best Western Hotels GB will also recycle any vouchers it receives to ensure environmental impact is minimised.

·	47 per cent of Brits confused about what to wear at work
·	Men have it easier when it comes to office dress
·	32 per cent arrived under-dressed for meetings
·	In Europe, Italy leads the way in business style stakes

In spite of fashion advice programmes filling our TV screen, us Brits can still find it difficult knowing how to dress for business, a poll by Best Western Hotels GB revealed today. The hotel group has spurred UK business people into action following revelations that conferences can confuse us, office parties are perplexing and interviews are impossible when it comes to business dress.

The research, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Best Western, revealed that half of us (47 per cent) struggle to know how to dress for business meetings and conferences and one in three of us have confessed to arriving at them under-dressed.

Also worrying is the fact that over a third of us (34 per cent) need help to know what to wear for the perennial office party and nearly a fifth of men (19 per cent) have simply no idea what to wear at conferences.

The hotel group, which offers more than 1,200 meeting rooms at its hotels through the free conference and venue finding service, First Place, became aware that many of its guests were unsure of how to dress for conferences and meetings and needed a helping hand.

What’s more, with women generally coming under more scrutiny than men for the way they dress in business scenarios, the hotel group was keen to make sure women felt they had reliable advice to help them.

In conjunction with top image guru, Karen Kay, Best Western Hotels GB has now launched a dedicated website – www.bestwestern.co.uk/dressforsuccess - where Brits can get some much needed tips and advice on dressing for business.

As a nation, the research also revealed that we believe we lag behind our European counterparts, with both men and women unanimously voting Italy as the country that boasts the best dressed business people. Nearly half of all men and women (44 and 47 per cent respectively) voted for the birthplace of style icons such as Versace, Valentino and Armani.

For women, France followed in second place, with nearly a quarter (24 per cent) thinking that Parisians and their fellow countrymen and women can out-dress us round the board table.

Interestingly, men were more likely to favour the German style of dress, with 14 per cent thinking they scrubbed up best for business, as opposed to a measly 3 per cent of women.

When it comes to colours, yellow came out of the survey as the worst to wear for business dress, closely followed by pink, with 82 and 79 per cent respectively of all respondents deeming them unsuitable for business scenarios.

However, this winter’s colour of choice, purple, was unfavoured by 55 per cent of respondents with no surprise that eternal favourites black and grey received the most favourable response.

Mikhaila Brentnall, PR Manager, Best Western Hotels GB, said: “Our research clearly showed that as a nation, we’re a little stumped when it comes to dressing appropriately for different business scenarios.

“As a hotel group we’ve also had first hand experience of seeing delegates and employees at conferences and meetings nervously assessing what colleagues and associates are wearing, for fear of being badly dressed.

“In response, we’ve joined with celebrity stylist Karen Kay to help people to dress for success and to give them at all levels the confidence they need.”
Karen Kay, image consultant, said: “My advice for those attending a conference would be even though you’re away, remember that you are dressing for a work-related function. It’s easy to fall into clothing complacency when away from your traditional workplace environment, but this is a prime opportunity for management to view the future potential of their staff.
“If you have seminars and presentations during the day, wear business-like attire and treat it as a ‘working wardrobe’. If your boss has told you that more informal clothes are acceptable, err on the side of caution.
“For example, I would suggest jeans are risky; opt for less casual skirts and trousers instead. Remember, you still need to make the effort to look presentable, even though you are dressed more casually, so make sure clothes are pressed neatly, shoes are polished and your hair is tidy.”

Karen Kay’s top tips for dressing for success in business

DO…
1.	…Look after your working wardrobe. Replace missing buttons, hang up your suit and polish your shoes.
2.	…Get professionally measured and buy clothes accordingly: don’t just assume you’re still a 16.5 shirt collar because that’s what your mum bought you 25 years ago.
3.	…Practice your tie-knotting – and always un-knot them at the end of the day (don’t loosen and pull over your head) before storing the tie properly – either hung on a hanger or rack, or rolled neatly.
4.	…Pay attention to what those above you on the career ladder are wearing. While it would be freaky to mimic their style in a copycat manner, try and emulate the look in a way that works for you.
5.	…Invest in good quality where it counts: you can get away with a cheaper shirt if you have a great tie. A sophisticated belt or briefcase will do wonders for a run-of-the-mill suit.
DON’T….
1.	…Ever forget you are dressing for success, not to seduce. Keep your out-of-hours wardrobe separate from your professional attire.
2.	…Be complacent about your clothing. Take a fresh look at your wardrobe every few months and discard anything that is permanently soiled or doesn’t fit. Try new combinations of existing pieces in your closet, too, then add the odd new item to freshen up your style.
3.	…Think you have to be fashionable to look fabulous. What works on the catwalks doesn’t necessarily work in the office. Go for well-fitting, classic pieces that flatter, with a nod to seasonal styling if it is appropriate.
4.	…Wear anything that is uncomfortable. It will show if you are in pain as your shoes give you blisters, or your rollneck is itchy. Likewise, ensure your clothes function without letting you down - ie your skirt doesn't ride up indecently as you sit, or your cleavage doesn't spill out.
5.	…Be afraid to go with your gut instinct: if clothes make you feel good, you’ll instantly come across as more confident.

Best Western, the largest group of independently owned and managed hotels, is scouring the nation to find the best tinsel towns – fun filled with festive cheer and the perfect places to spend Christmas in Great Britain. The most festive of them all will be crowned the ‘Best British Christmas Town of 2007’.

To make sure there are no humbugs spoiling the festive fun the hotel group has appointed its very own Director of Christmas. Declan Austin will be helping launch the Father Christmas style search for towns or villages that really go the extra mile over the festive period.

Talking about his role, Declan said: “From Christmas markets and mulled wine to live reindeer, choir singing and traditional church services, we want to find the town that goes that extra mile to have the most festive fun,”

“We want to celebrate the individuality of towns and villages across the country, particularly at this magical time. It might be the town people live in or somewhere they have visited.” he added.

Those who nominate their favourite Christmas towns, have the chance of winning a short break with a night for two at a Best Western hotel near one of the final Top 10 Christmas towns.

Nominations should be sent to christmastown@bestwestern.co.uk by 23rd November. See full details of the competition on www.bestwestern.co.uk/christmastown

The search, led by Best Western Hotels, revealed the ancient Roman settlement, nestled on the Welsh borders in Cheshire, is Great Britain’s favourite festive destination.

Chester was selected because it offers a unique blend of medieval atmosphere and modern entertainment throughout the Christmas period.

With an abundance of festive activity, Best Western, the largest group of independently owned and managed hotels in Great Britain, has appointed its very own Director of Christmas, Declan Austin, to manage all festivities.

Speaking about his role, Declan said: “My job is to make sure no humbugs spoil the festive fun as well as working with Santa’s little helpers to scour the nation and find the perfect winter wonderland.

“We had many nominations but with everything from Christmas markets and mulled wine to log cabins and Frost Fairs, Chester goes that extra mile and really is full of seasons greetings and glad tidings.

“It’s a beautiful place to visit at this time of year with Lantern Parades, stunning lights and seasonal entertainment.

“Not only that, Chester zoo is also set to be transformed into a winter wonderland for all the family.”

Other towns and cities that made the top 10 include: Battle, East Sussex, Belfast, York, Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Edinburgh, Lincoln, Ashbourne, and Delph.

With more hotels in more areas of Great Britain than anyone else in their sector these new hotels, which range from Langbank in Scotland down to Exeter, will boost the groups coverage, especially in the major cities of London, Leeds and Chester.

What’s more, as the demand for the brand increases year-upon-year the largest group of independently owned and managed hotels is set to announce yet more hotels joining the marketing consortium with ‘Premier’ properties in the pipeline.

With over 280 hotels across England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands the group also raised their minimum standards enforcing tighter quality assessments in order to continually improve the customer experience. However, it still managed to secure one of the highest number of hotels joining – with an impressive four in as many days!

The increase in brand standards for consistency and expectancy also resulted in a total of 11 properties being removed from the brand last year.

Keith Pope, Director of Membership Services said: “Independent hoteliers are increasingly noticing the need to become part of an international brand, rather than a domestic operator, to compete in the fast changing hotel marketplace.”

“Also, with more distinctive and independent quality hotels to be announced imminently and Best Westerns 30th birthday, this year is sure to be a celebratory one for the brand.”

The hotels that joined Best Western last year are, in date order;

·	Best Western Castle Inn Hotel, Bassenthwaite
“Since personal recommendation is now the single most important source of information when it comes to the venue selection decision, these venues certainly appear to be on the right track.”
With only four hotels achieving this status outside of London the hotel now proudly holds the title as Yorkshire’s only ‘Premier’ hotel.

Now known as the Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel, this property has been in the McIlroy family for 71 years and had three generations of ownership. With a total of 56 bedrooms, of which over half have lounge areas, the hotel boasts mud beds, sleigh beds, four and even five posters.

The Premier status is the highest accolade to be achieved from the Best Western group – with only a further five hotels making it past the stringent assessments. To achieve the status the hotel not only achieved its four star rating last year but also has been working hard to ensure that every first impression creates the ‘wow factor’ associated with a Premier hotel.

David Clarke, Chief Executive, Best Western Hotels said: “The Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel has achieved the highest of standards with excellent facilities, spectacular rooms and personal customer service and we are delighted to be welcoming the hotel into our Premier collection.”

Refurbishments, renovations and established local links had to be created in order to achieve Premier. This included a half a million pound reception and lounge area created with a Premier design look and feel in mind, including handmade chandeliers.

A selection of bedrooms have also been refurbished with upgraded flooring and cosmetic details. The hotel has also expanded their leisure facilities with beauty treatments and established links with a local gym, golf at a nearby club and horse riding.

Richard McIlroy, Managing Director and owner, Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel said of the hotels achievement, ”We have been aiming for Premier status at the hotel for a while now and through our dedication to investment in our facilities and services, attention to detail in our renovations and sheer hard work at the hotel we are pleased to be displaying the Premier plaque outside the hotel.”

This year the number of Premier properties in the Best Western portfolio is set to rise as the membership team strive to increase the number of hotels both joining and achieving this exceptional quality and standard.

Wolfgang who will be predominantly based at Best Western’s Central Office in York, will be heading up the recruitment of new members into the marketing consortium, particularly focusing on expanding the Premier hotels category for the brand.
With a wealth of experience in the hotel industry, in particular sales and development, Wolfgang joins the largest group of independently owned and managed hotels from Prem Group UK where he was the brands National Sales Manager.

Speaking about his new role Wolfgang said: “I am looking forward to being part of such a membership drive for Best Western and introducing new high quality, four star members to the group. Speaking with independent hoteliers on a daily basis will mean that no membership will be the same and neither will my day to day work.”

Last year saw the group recruit one of the largest number of hotels into the consortium with the total at present standing at 282 in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands, of which five of these are Premier hotels.

Keith Pope, Director of Membership, Best Western said: “Following the high number of distinctive and individual hotels into the group last year we are delighted to be welcoming Wolfgang to drive this recruitment success forward.”
The national campaign, which features members of staff from Best Western Hotels across the UK, will target both the consumer and corporate markets to bring the message of exceptional service to the forefront of the consumers mind.

The campaign started with a nationwide search within the groups hotels to find the real life ‘hidden gems’. Staff at over 280 hotels nominated colleagues for their exceptional delivery – going above and beyond customer expectations.

Using contemporary black and white photography and clear customer benefit headlines, the marketing team are to use the new brand campaign throughout direct mail, email communications, dedicated web pages, on and offline adverts and PR.

Tim Wade, Best Western’s Head of Marketing commented: “The key differentiator for Best Western is that whilst part of a global brand all our hotels are individually owned and managed each offering that personal level of customer service. We wanted to not just promote it but also celebrate this through our marketing activity.”

“Instead of using models or actors to front the campaign, we decided to feature the real people that work in our hotels - the people who go above and beyond the call of duty, to offer guests an unrivalled level of personal service.”

The campaign, devised by Foundation, a Leeds-based marketing communications agency, includes national press advertising in the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph as well as their weekend magazine supplements. Direct mail, online and viral marketing activity will also be incorporated into the campaign.

Neil Onions, account director at Foundation commented: “The brief given to us was to reflect the individual personality and charm of each Best Western hotel. Through the campaign we hope to communicate that thanks to the dedicated and passionate members of staff in every hotel, we believe each guests’ stay will be truly unique.”

Based in Preston, the four star hotel is the newest addition to a small number of exceptional Premier hotels within the Best Western brand. With only six hotels achieving this status, outside of London, the hotel now proudly holds the title as Lancashire’s only Premier hotel.

Now known as the Best Western Premier Leyland Hotel, this property has received a multi-million pound refurbishment over the last three years and has been renovated to the highest of standards. In fact, the management boasts a ‘wow around every corner’ at this hotel.

Purpose built in the 1970’s as a hotel on the edge of the motorway this property now has a new look ‘decadent and sexy’ décor. This is evident through the hotels choice of original, modern sculptures and unusual furniture creating intrigue in every room.

With a total of 93 individual executive bedrooms, including a bridal suite, fantastic leisure facilities including a large indoor swimming pool, spa bath, steam room, sauna and exercise room it is easy to see why this hotel hits the mark at a Premier hotel.
As part of the plans the Four Seasons Restaurant was renovated to feature a tribute to magnificent 1970’s architecture, with a pentagonal vaulted ceiling, optic fibre lighting and 'kitch' statues.
Other little attentions to details securing the ‘Premier’ title are GHD hair straightners in bedrooms, bubble bath butlers, female concierge, specially created nibbles and drinks on check-in and personal DVD players for lone diners.

David Clarke, Chief Executive, Best Western Hotels said: “The Best Western Premier Leyland has achieved the highest of standards with excellent facilities, spectacular rooms and personal customer service and we are delighted to be welcoming the hotel into our Premier collection.”

The Premier status is the highest accolade to be achieved from the Best Western group – with only a further seven hotels in Great Britain making it past the stringent assessments. What’s more, out of 4,200 properties worldwide only 100 make the grade.

Stuart Hunter, Managing Director, Best Western Premier Leyland Hotel said of the hotels achievement, ”We have been aiming for Premier status at the hotel for a while now and throughout our renovation we had Premiership in mind. Our attention to detail and hard work at the hotel has made it possible to proudly display the Premier plaque outside the hotel.

This year the number of Premier properties in the Best Western portfolio is set to rise as the membership team strive to increase the number of hotels both joining and achieving this exceptional quality and standard.
ONLY IF IT’S HIM AND THE HISTORY

With the UK release date of Sex and the City just days away, women everywhere are going into meltdown.

However, while Carrie and Co. juggle men, Manolos and Manhattan, British women are more focused on romance, relationships and getting that all important ring.

According to a survey by Best Western Hotels, UK women are far more like marriage-minded Charlotte York than man-eating Samantha Jones. 52 per cent of women surveyed would chose York or Edinburgh for a romantic weekend in the hope that all its history might inspire their other half to commit to a long term relationship while only 4 per cent plumped for Cardiff to spend a sexy sleepover with their very own Tom Jones.

In joint second place with 13 per cent of the votes were the dreaming spires of Oxford and Cambridge, showing that like Miranda, British women are looking for someone to stimulate their brain and London for labels, shoes and more shoes – just like Carrie Bradshaw.

Best Western’s Mikhaila Brentnall says: “While we won’t turn down a Martini and a new pair of shoes on a romantic break, it appears that us British girls are looking for something a bit more substantial.”

The survey also reveals that Nottingham was voted the least sexy destination for a UK break. 18 per cent of women put it at the bottom of their list of dream destinations. The East Midlands city was closely followed in the un-sexy stakes by Leeds and Liverpool.
•	92% under pressure to book ‘good’ hotels for bosses
•	Seven out of ten feel ‘left out’ when booking beds
•	4% have booked somewhere ‘bad’ on purpose

PAs across the country have been divulging their pillow talk to reveal the secrets of booking hotel accommodation for their bosses and it’s certainly anything but sweet dreams

The revelations come as part of a survey conducted by Best Western Hotels which show that PAs are increasingly stressed out by the demands placed on them to provide good quality accommodation, within a tight budget, and long to visit the same destinations as their bosses. So it’s not surprising that some aren’t adverse to playing a trick or two on their superiors!

The survey, conducted by Best Western Hotels, found that 92% of British PAs were under pressure to provide good quality accommodation for their boss when he or she is out of town on business.

With senior managers and directors travelling more than ever, booking hotel accommodation is an important administrative duty and when choosing suitable accommodation, 52% of PAs surveyed cited location as the most important factor, followed by cost (32%) and comfort (16%).

With all that pressure to source the perfect bed, it’s no surprise that sometimes things go wrong – sometimes on purpose it seems. One in three PAs surveyed said that their boss had a bad experience when staying at a hotel they booked. Complaints such as misplaced bookings and noisy building works as well as more general gripes with the overall standard of hotel accommodation show just how hard it is to please.
However, if you’re a manager booked into a less than agreeable hotel be warned. A mischevious 4% of all PAs admitted booking their boss into somewhere bad on purpose, showing that next time you’re miles from your next meeting and things are not up to scratch there may be more at play than a fault on the booking system.

The survey also highlighted the unfulfilment of many PAs working in the sector today. Over 80% wished they could go to the places their bosses visited from time to time while 72% said they felt overlooked at work when other members of the team were given incentives.

Here to help our PAs out is the launch of Best Business perfectly placed to not only take the stress out of booking accommodation, but also give back some well deserved rewards in the shape of wine, spa breaks and Amazon voucher rewards – to name but a few.

It’s not just PAs who will benefit from great perks either. Businesses are entitles to a 3% rebate on all bookings, 5% off all conferences and 15% off leisure breaks for all staff - as well as the all important discounts on everyday business accommodation. That will certainly help with the credit crunch!

With the launch of Best Business, Best Western hopes that problem bookings may be a thing of the past. Tim Wade, Best Western’s Head of Marketing, said: “It appears that booking hotel accommodation is a minefield and we hope that with the launch of Best Business we can help make this process as smooth as possible.

“If you’re a PA responsible for booking business accommodation then this is the solution for you. Simply sign up your company to the scheme and enjoy ease of booking over the phone or online, monthly statements and rewards. With all these benefits we hope PAs will no longer feel overlooked at work.”

“Also, there will be no more worries about what your boss is going to receive when he or she stays away on business as all Best Western hotels are subject to stringent quality and assurance checks to ensure standards are maintained throughout Britain.”

Notes to Editors:

Total sample size was 150 UK PAs and Office managers. Fieldwork was undertaken between 3rd – 9th June 2008. The survey was carried out online.

Since its launch back on 4th July 1978, Best Western has seen phenomenal growth with the number of properties across England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands resting at over 280 hotels. Today it is the largest independently owned and managed group of hotels in the UK.

Mikhaila Brentnall, PR manager for Best Western comments: “We have been growing our hotel group carefully for 30 years and we’re very proud to be reaching this great milestone with such success. We really want to celebrate our birthday with our loyal customers and allow those who have not yet experienced Best Western hospitality to be able to do so at the very best price.”

The largest group of independently owned and managed hotels, based in York, won the award for the ‘Best Group Marketing Campaign’, wowing the judges for their integrated marketing activity for their partnership with Disney’s film Enchanted.

The award was presented at a glitzy ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London with many of the hotel and catering industry’s top names attending the celebrations from top celeb chefs to industry experts.

Talking about the nomination judge Giovanna Grossi, AA Group Area Manager said: “The Best Western Disney campaign stood out from its competitors because of a combination of successful returns, a real fun element which generated some great national press coverage and the considerate charitable element linked to the project.”

“This was a well structured interesting campaign sprinkled with a Disney magic that had all the judges enchanted!”

The groups Chief Executive, David Clarke, who picked up the award on the night was also interviewed by celebrity Royal reporter Jenny Bond about achieving such an accolade.

David said of the success: “This is a great achievement for the group and shows how our marketing team are at the cutting edge of communications, delivering great results for our member hotels.”

“Securing a partnership with Disney was a great accomplishment for the whole company and the marketing activity ensured that we maximised every opportunity.”

Best Western was one of four companies shortlisted for the award, piping Malmaison, Charlton House Catering and Sodexho Prestige to the post.
If you’re one of the thousands of Brits who only have a few days to spare and a few pennies to play with, follow Best Western Hotel’s guide to the perfect ‘Breakation’, right here at home.

Looks like rain
Can’t tell your Cumulonimbus from your Cirrus? Keeping an eye on the weather is a ritual for us Brits and we’re never far from a summer shower. To give revellers the best chance of staying dry however, Best Western is handing out Cloud Spotting Cards at hotels close to the seaside. So whilst summer wouldn’t be summer without the odd spot of rain, make like a meteorologist and decide when to hit the beach and when to head for indoor attractions.

Folding a deckchair
The traditional deckchair is as much a part of the Great British holiday as Victorian piers and a stick of rock. Save your blushes on the beach by following Best Western’s simple guide to putting one up:

•	Stand the folded deckchair vertically with both folding arms pointing upwards
•	Rotate the longer notched arm away from the frame
•	Rotate the shorter arm towards the longer one and engage the horizontal bar in one of the notches
•	Place the chair on the ground and adjust the seating angle
•	Sit back and enjoy your ice cream

Avoiding the queues
With so many of us holidaying at home, demand at the top attractions will be higher than ever this summer. To give a spot of local insight, Best Western Hotel managers are giving staff extra training this summer on the most popular excursions so they can advise customers about the busiest attractions and let them know the ideal times to avoid the queues.

So there you have it, follow Best Western’s simple guide to holidaying at home, and you will be only a donkey ride away from the perfect ‘Breakation’.
