The West Pier was a Grade I listed pier that dated back to 1866, but famously burned down in 2003. Plans for an observation tower (the i-360) to replace it are underway.

Brighton and Hove were brought together under one local authority in 1997, but each has something different to offer. In 2000 they were jointly given city status by Queen Elizabeth I as part of the millennium celebrations.
