Coventry Cathedral

Information

The Coventry Cathedral quarter is notable for being able to trace its ecclesiastical past back through three cathedrals. Four million people visited today's version in its first year. In its time it has also been voted Britain's most popular 20th-century building.

The first was the only English cathedral to be destroyed by Henry VIII. Archaeological displays from the site include the standing undercrofts of the great lost church, dating back to the 12th century.

The second was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1940. Its ruins have become a place of pilgrimage and are the focus of a global ministry of peace and reconciliation. It's even possible to climb the 180+ steps of the Old Cathedral's St Michael's Tower.

The third and current cathedral, designed by Basil Spence, was one of the wonders of post-war Britain when it opened in 1962. It also has a fine gallery of post-war British art, with major works by John Piper, Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink, as well as a monumental tapestry by Graham Sutherland.
