The UK’s rock music is celebrated in a new campaign by Visit Britain.

The tourism site has produced a map that highlights the places associated with Britain’s best-known musical exports. Unsurprisingly, Liverpool’s Beatles connections feature heavily, as does Manchester’s role in the rise of The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis.

The Guardian reports that record company EMI is involved, and will be offering 140,000 downloads via the Visit Britain site. The idea is to enable visitors to build playlists according to their destination.

Visit Britain’s chief executive Tom Wright says that a fifth of potential travellers are inspired to choose a destination because of the nation’s music: “British music and musicians, solo artists and bands are often someone’s first introduction to the unique appeals of this country,” he told the paper.
