London's Tube network carried an estimated 4.17 million passengers in one day during December, setting a new record.
Transport for London (TfL) says that Friday 7 December was the busiest day yet seen on the underground, beating the previous record of around four million passengers, set on Friday 8 December 2006.
According to TfL, passenger numbers on the Tube are rising by about 7% each year, with the number of passenger journeys expected to total around 1.1 billion in 2007.
"The fact that the Tube is now carrying more passengers than ever before illustrates its crucial role in London's prosperity," said London's mayor Ken Livingstone.
"The significance of that is shown by one simple fact - every day the London Underground carries more passengers than the entire national rail network."
