Hospitality businesses and tourist attractions in Bournemouth have been celebrated in an awards ceremony held last week at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC).

The Bournemouth Tourism Awards 2007 recognised the "quality, achievements and continuous hard work of the tourism industry" across the Dorset town.

Winners were selected in 17 categories that ranged from the best shopping experiences to Sustainable Tourism Initiative of the year.

The 1812 nightclub scooped a Best Evening Experience award, while the BIC itself was rewarded for its Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.

Best Western's Connaught Hotel was highly commended in the Large Hotel of the Year category.

The hotel, bought by entrepreneur David Miller two years ago as an ailing business, last year won an AA Rosette for its Blake's restaurant. After a surprise visit this year, AA inspectors raised the hotel's merit rating to 80%.
