A giant hole was unveiled at Tate Modern today, the latest installation to be staged in the South Bank gallery's Turbine Hall.

The work, which is titled Shibboleth 2007, was produced by Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo. It runs the full 167-metre length of the former power station's hall.

The title for the piece comes from the biblical massacre of the same name. Salcedo explained that the chasm created by the hole is meant to represent racial hatred and divisions in society in general.

The installation, which took five weeks to create, begins as a crack in the floor which widens as it crosses the room. The hole will remain on display until next April.

The gallery hasn't revealed how the installation was created or how it will be filled in, but Tate director Nicholas Serota told BBC News: "There is a crack, there is a line, and eventually there will be a scar and that scar will remain."

If a trip to the Tate Modern sounds like a good crack, why not incorporate it into a London weekend break?
