The world’s first large-scale ‘wave farm’ will be built off the coast of north Cornwall, it has been confirmed today.

Installed across an area of several square kilometres, the Wave Hub will allow engineers to test new ideas for generating electricity from waves. The £28 million project is expected to produce enough energy to power several thousand homes when it becomes operational in 2009.

Despite fears that the scheme could have an impact on the area’s famous surf, the project has been given the thumbs-up by environmental group Surfers Against Sewage.

Campaigns officer Andy Cummins said that the Wave Hub was good news for Cornwall and for the future of renewable energy generation in the UK: "We look forward to using the same energy we've used to ride waves to light up our homes," he said.
