Seven railway stations in Merseyside are to benefit from a £1.77-million investment to improve accessibility.

Works covered by the scheme will include the installation of a fully-accessible toilet at Bidston, a height-adjustable ticket counter in New Brighton, and automatic entrance doors at Newton le Willows.

Upgraded customer information systems will be fitted at all seven stations, which also include St Helens Junction, Southport, Wallasey Grove Road and Wallasey Village.

Regional transport body Merseytravel has provided nearly £935,000 of funding for the works, with the remainder coming from Department of Transport Access for All funds.

Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales said: "Our aim is to create a single integrated public transport network that is accessible to everyone."

"This is key funding for us," added Councillor Bob Roberts, chair of Merseytravel's Transport Access Panel. "Small schemes such as this can make a big difference to people's lives."
