With tube strikes, bendy buses and the Congestion Charge, transport in London is rarely out of the news.

However, the cheapest way to get around the capital is about to take centre stage, during London Walking Weekend (15 - 16 September). Organised by Transport for London, the weekend features free guided walks around the city, and coincides with the Mayor’s Thames Festival 2007.

"Despite the fact that London is a very walker friendly city few of us explore it on foot," said Simon Waters of the Ramblers Association. "Many people in inner-city areas don’t walk because of a lack of confidence or knowledge about places to go."

As well as the Ramblers, the event is supported by Walk London and Living Streets, both of which aim to encourage more travel around the capital on foot.
